  • Flying Week - 5th-9th May

The club will be operating throughout the week Monday 5th - Friday 9th May. The priority will be for some fun flying including local soaring and cross-country tasks whenever the weather allows. Please e-mail me or sign the list in the Clubroom if you intend joining us. As a course will be taking place throughout the week, any members who want instructional flying should check with Alan Jolly or myself beforehand.

    Mutual Flying

A recent letter from the BGA National Coach provides advice about the standards required of club members to fly P1 in two seaters with other members. These are essentially the same as for Basic Instructors - excluding the actual teaching of gliding.

In the light of this advice, previous approval for mutual flying at SGC is withdrawn with immediate effect. Any members wishing to fly P1 on mutual flights in future should discuss it with me and will have to demonstrate that they meet these standards before their log books are endorsed.

    Launch Marshal Reminder

Launch Marshals must be solo pilots briefed and signed off for the task. In addition to checking ground and airspace, and initiating the launch signals, the launch marshal should first check that the glider and pilot are fully ready for the launch. (e.g. All ground equipment is detached, canopy and brakes are closed and locked and the pilot’s hand remains on the release after the cable is attached.)

Of course the pilot has complete responsibility for ensuring that the glider is ready and launch marshal checks are purely additional safeguards. Therefore any lapses spotted by launch marshals should be reported to the duty instructor.

Local Soaring Task Turnpoints from Seighford

The following turn-points may be used for local soaring tasks from Seighford.
The list is in west-east order and gives the name, specific feature, OS Ref (Map 127) and distance from SGC.

High Offley, church, ref 784262, 4.2Nm
Norbury Junction, road bridge over canal at marina, ref 793229, 4Nm
Copmere, road junction south of lake, ref 803295, 3.7Nm
Gnosall Heath, A518 bridge over canal, ref 820204, 4.1Nm
Eccleshall, church NW of village centre, ref 827292, 2.6Nm
Millmeece, A519 bridge over railway, ref 832331, 4.3Nm
    Haughton, church, ref 865205, 2.3Nm
Norton Bridge, railway station, ref 873298, 2.4Nm
    Bradley, church, ref 880180, 4.2Nm
    Stafford Services (N), B5026 bridge over M6, ref 885324, 3.9Nm
    Stone, roundabout A34/A520/B5026, ref 901333, 4.7Nm
Stafford Castle, castle keep, ref 902222, 2.9Nm
    M6, J14, ref 903255, 2.4Nm
Yarlet, Yarlet School, ref 913293, 3.5Nm
    Stafford University, roundabout A513 / A518, ref 944237, 4.6Nm
Sandon, B5066 bridge over railway, ref 948294, 4.9Nm

N.B. You must obtain permission and a briefing from the duty instructor before attempting a local task. Unless you have your cross-country endorsement, you must remain within 5Nm and easy gliding distance of Seighford. In a K13 this means allowing about 300’ per Nm for the glide + a margin for unexpected sink + a safe circuit height. Therefore 3000’ at 5Nm should get you back home safely - provided you are upwind!
